FACT: There are many different types of therapy. For instance, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy emphasizes evaluating unhelpful thoughts that may be impacting your emotions and/or behaviors, whereas Exposure Therapy is used to help people who are suffering from a specific phobia or fear. MYTH: All therapists are the same
FACT: See above. Just as there are many different types of therapy, there are many different therapists out there. Therapy is a personal and vulnerable process; shop around and find someone you feel comfortable with!
MYTH: My therapist possesses some type of magic power or knowledge that will instantly make me feel better
FACT: Sadly, no. Therapists are not wizards. Therapists do have some knowledge and training that will hopefully benefit you, but the real insight and ‘magic’ comes from you! You are your own expert –we are there to guide you, but you are in the driver’s seat.
MYTH: Therapy is a passive process
FACT: Just like exercise, you get out of therapy what you put into it. If you are an active participant in therapy, you will likely enjoy it and reap the rewards quicker. Be your own best advocate! Ask questions, challenge your therapist, and ask for things if you feel you are not getting what you want or need.
